Torres fires Liverpool to a much-needed win
Torres' goal gave Liverpool a 2-1 win over Blackburn, ending team's run of seven matches without a victory.

Liverpool: Liverpool striker Fernando Torres ended a run of six matches without a goal on Sunday with the winner in the Reds' crucial 2-1 Premier League victory over Blackburn.

Goalkeeper Paul Robinson had kept the Reds at bay at Anfield until Sotirios Kyrgiakos' 48th-minute header. Although Jamie Carragher's own-goal quickly leveled the scores, Torres struck his second goal of the season in the 53rd.

The goal ended Liverpool's run of seven matches without a victory in all competitions but was not enough to lift the team that once dominated English football out of the relegation zone.

Torres has looked out of form this season since disappointing at the World Cup with Spain, with his only goal coming in a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at the end of August.

But Torres has now scored five times in Liverpool's last four meetings with Blackburn.

Robinson's best save came in the eighth minute when Torres' ball to Maxi Rodriguez set up the Argentina international for a low cross to Joe Cole, whose first-time shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. A stretching Raul Meireles drove the rebound wide.

Kyrgiakos' header from a corner was also kept out by Robinson, who then dived to his left to stop Steven Gerrard.

Kyrgiakos was a regular threat in the air and he headed Gerrard's corner past Robinson for the opening goal.

Rovers equalised just two minutes later when Paul Konchesky's goal-line clearance from El-Hadji Diouf's shot hit Carragher and bounced into the net but Torres drifted to the far post to side-foot Cole's cross into the net for the winner.
