It also marks the birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate – Marie Curie, a Polish-French physicist and chemist born in 1867. National Cancer Awareness Day is dedicated to raising awareness about early diagnosis, preventive measures, and cancer treatment. In 1975, the National Cancer Control Programme aimed at setting up cancer treatment facilities across the country. However, in 1984-85, the program shifted its focus towards early detection and cancer prevention.
