ollIt has been over a decade since the last Twilight movie, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 2, was released in 2012. However, the romance fantasy film still has a thriving and active fanbase. Despite its massive popularity and commercial success, Twilight continues to be criticised for the portrayal of the protagonist Bella Swan as submissive and single-mindedly obsessed with her love life. Edward Cullen’s character, played by Robert Pattinson, has also been deemed as predatory and controlling. Actor Kristen Stewart, who played Bella Swan, recently shared similar sentiments towards Twilight.
Stewart, who is promoting her latest film Love Lies Bleeding, appeared on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. When the conversation moved towards Twilight and the relationship between Bella and Edward, Stewart said that if it was up to her, she would have broken up with Edward for being too controlling. She said, “He (Edward) was trying to sort of control whether or not she (Bella) made choices for herself. I would’ve broken up with him immediately.”
Stewart referenced Edward opposing Bella’s wish to become a vampire and said, “I mean if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me.” Stewart said that she understood why Edward was protective of Bella but added, “You gotta let a girl make her own choices.”
Earlier this month, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns confirmed Twillight’s TV adaption. Burns mentioned that the TV reboot would be made as an animated series, which came as a surprise to many who were expecting a live-action series. Author Stephenie Meyer is also expected to be part of the series. It is still unclear to what extent the TV series will remain true to the books or if they will take a different turn.
