Of the 103 re-contesting MLAs in Telangana, assets of 90 MLAs (87%) have increased in the range of 3% to 1331%, says a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Pailla Shekar Reddy of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) from Bhongir constituency has declared maximum increase in assets with an increase of Rs 136.47 crores — from Rs 91.04 crore in 2018 to Rs 227.51 crore in 2023. Assets of Alla Venkateswar Reddy of BRS from Devarkadra constituency have increased by Rs 59.02 crore, from Rs 20.15 crore in 2018 to Rs 79.17 crore in 2023. Assets of Manchireddy Kishan Reddy of BRS from Ibrahimpatnam constituency have risen by Rs 52.59 crore, from Rs 7.99 crore in 2018 to Rs 60.58 crore in 2023.
All top five recontesting MLAs who have registered highest increase in assets belong to the BRS.
While Pailla Shekhar Reddy’s source of income is listed as business, Venkateswar Reddy’s is salary and agriculture, and Kishan Reddy’s is business and agriculture.
In another report, it was estimated that while 96% of BRS leaders are crorepatis (114 out of 119), the number is at 94% in Congress (111 out of 118) and 84% in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (93 out of 111).
The top three richest politicians are from the Congress. The richest politician in the state is G Vivekanand, Congress candidate from Chennur, with declared assests of more than Rs 606 crore. He was the head of manifesto committee of Telangana BJP and recently joined the Congress. The second on the list is Munugode candidate, Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, with assets worth Rs 458 crore. He joined the BJP for some time but came back to the Congress. The third on the list is Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, a candidate from Palair with declared wealth of over Rs 433 crore. Fourth on the list is Paila Shekar Reddy from the BRS. M Ravi Kumar Yadav from Serilingampally is the only BJP candidate in the top 10 richest politicians’ list.
