New Delhi: As many as ten high courts in the country may soon get new chief justices.

The Collegium in the Supreme Court, on January 10, recommended 10 new chief justices for the high courts of Delhi, Calcutta, Kerala, Karnataka, Chhatisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Telangana & Andhra Pradesh.

Most of the posts have been lying vacant for long due to a lack of consensus between the government and the Collegium, which comprises the five most senior judges, including the Chief Justice of India, in the top court.

The recommendations were made two days before the other four judges had held a press conference to question the CJI over the exercise of administrative powers and transparency in administration.

Justice Aniruddha Bose, a senior puisne Judge of Calcutta High Court, has been recommended to take over as the chief justice of the Delhi High Court.

For the vacancy at the Calcutta High Court, its senior-most judge, Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya, has been deemed “suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of that High Court.”

Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, who is presently the chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court, has been transferred, “in the interest of better administration of justice”, to Karnataka High Court as its first judge.

In his place, Justice Tarun Agrawala, who is the senior-most Judge from Allahabad High Court, has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

Justice TB Radhakrishnan, presently the chief justice of Chhattisgarh High Court, has been transferred as the chief justice of the Telangana & Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi, the senior-most Judge from Patna High Court, will now be the chief justice of the Chhatisgarh High Court.

The Collegium has recommended that Justice Abhilasha Kumari, the senior-most Judge from Himachal Pradesh High Court, will become the chief justice of the Manipur High Court.

Justice Antony Dominic, who is the senior-most Judge from Kerala High Court and at present is functioning as Acting Chief Justice of that High Court, has been recommended to be appointed as the regular chief justice there.

Himachal Pradesh High Court will also get a new chief justice. Justice Surya Kant, the senior puisne Judge from Punjab & Haryana High Court, will go to this High Court as the chief justice.

After the retirement of the incumbent chief justice on February 28, the senior-most Judge from Rajasthan High Court Justice Ajay Rastogi will take over as the chief justice of the Tripura High Court.

Apart from this, Justice Hrishikesh Roy of the Gauhati High Court has been proposed to be transferred to the Kerala High Court.
