VIJAYAWADA: As many as 1500 farmers and 80 tenant ryots are committing suicide every year in the state due to anti-farmer policy , said All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) president S Ramachandra Pillai.He was addressing to a meeting organised as part of the celebration of the 75th year of foundation of the AIKS here on Monday.Pillai, who participated as the chief guest, said since its inception, the AIKS with 2.24 crore of farmers from 26 states of the country as members has been fighting to safeguard the interest of farm communities.AIKS is committed to raise its voice against the antipeasant policies of both the Union and state governments, he said.Coming down heavily on the Union government, Pillai said it was a group of people with antipeasant mindsets.The Centre has not done substantially for the welfare of farmers as a majority of the farmers in agriculturedependant states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra are facing drought situation every year with erratic monsoon, which drag the ryots into penury.The welfare plans introduced by the governments have been hardly able to address the farmers grievances as the farmers are still victims of landlords and apathetic attitude of officials, he said.Speaking on the occasion, AIKS vice- president S Mallareddy said, AIKS had staged many fights and struggled hard to tone down the anti-peasant forces in the governments.Saying that investments in agriculture was very low, he said that despite Indian economy is inherently agrarian, it lags far behind in investments in the farm sector as compared to countries like USA, China.
