A special court for UAPA cases in Maharashtra’s Pune on Friday found Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalskar guilty in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, while three other accused, Virendra Tawde, Vikram Bhave and Sanjeev Punalekar were acquitted of charges due to a lack of evidence. The verdict in the case comes after 11 years.
Andure and Kalskar were sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment. Failure to pay the fine will result in additional imprisonment.
Dabholkar, 67, a well-known rationalist, was shot dead while on a morning walk on Omkareshwar Bridge in Pune on August 20, 2013. Five persons were named as accused in the case.
This verdict has raised eyebrows, particularly with Tawde’s acquittal surprising Dabholkar’s family. While this outcome may shake faith in the justice system, it also demonstrates the importance of a fair trial.
Currently, Punalekar and Bhave remain at large. Tawde, accused of masterminding the plot, has been acquitted due to the failure of government evidence. Similarly, Punalekar and Bhave have not been proven guilty, leading to their acquittal as well.
While the verdict respects the legal process, Dabholkar’s family has indicated their intention to challenge the acquittal of certain suspects in the High Court. This pursuit of justice highlights the complexities and challenges in such high-profile cases.
While speaking with the media, Hamid Dabholkar, son of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, said, “Tawade, who is considered the mastermind of this, has been acquitted. We will be approaching the upper court against the acquittal of Tawade and the other two accused who were granted bail earlier.”
The long-awaited verdict brings mixed emotions. While it offers some closure for the victim’s family, it also raises questions about the adequacy of the evidence and the judicial process. However, it underscores the importance of perseverance and faith in the legal system. The acquittal of some suspects may lead to further legal battles, indicating that the quest for justice in this case is far from over.
