Ahmedabad: Twenty-two people, including three children, were killed and three others injured when an Ahmedabad-bound luxury bus collided with a truck at Narmada howkdi in Bharuch district of Gujarat early on Wednesday.
About 41 people were on board the bus.
According to the police sources, the bus caught fire immediately after the collision, burning the passengers beyond recognition. The bodies have been sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
The truck driver has been arrested and Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 for the family members of those killed.
"Only after post-mortem we will be able to ascertain how many of them were males and how many females. The DNA tests will also be done on the deceased," DSP, Bharuch G S Malik said.
"The bus had only one entry and exit point. As soon as the bus hit the truck, the panicked passengers ran to the back of the vehicle and were trapped when fire erupted from the rear portion," he added.
Meanwhile, the injured were admitted to a hospital in Bharuch but discharged after first aid.
Many passengers are believed to be from Mumbai, police said, adding the exact details will be known only after getting
information from the travel agency running the luxury bus.
