New Delhi: As many as 38 of the 68 victims of the Samjhauta Express tragedy still remain unidentified 84 hours after the ghastly incident. Of the 29 people identified so far, 23 are Pakistani nationals and six Indians.
Only three victims were identified on Thursday, two of whom are Pakistani nationals. Among them, 65-year-old Bano was a resident of Aligarh while Abdul Wahid Sheikh (70) and Saleem Khan hailed from Karachi.
After completing the formalities relatives of 12 Pakistani victims took the bodies to their home country on Wednesday. India handed over the bodies at the Wagah border.
According to official sources, most of the bodies lying at the Panipat Civil Hospital were charred beyond recognition, creating great difficulty in identifying them.
The authorities have already made arrangements for embalming the bodies and six teams of Army doctors are in the town for this purpose. The officials are now waiting for the DNA tests to be conducted on the bodies and the relatives in order to establish their identifies.
The bodies of seven victims — six of them from the same family — were flown into Faisalabad on Thursday. Relatives of the victims were unconsolable when the bodies landed at the Faisal base airport.
Among the relatives was Anwar Ali, who received six bodies of his relatives — including his brother and sister — in the blasts that killed 68 people, mostly Pakistanis.
