A 70-year-old man was arrested by Panamadangi police on Wednesday, for attempting to murder his wife, suspecting her fidelity.
According to police, the victim, Lalitha (55) was attacked by her husband Chinnakannan. Police said Lalitha’s relatives had rushed her to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital, in Adugamparai, after a neighbour informed them that she was found with cuts all over her body, near Venkalamalai on Tuesday.
Based on a statement from Lalitha, the police arrested Chinnakannan for trying to murder her, suspecting her fidelity. In her statement, Lalitha said that her husband took her to Venkalamalai to collect firewood on Tuesday afternoon. After they entered the forest area, Chinnakannan picked up a quarrel with her probing her fidelity, and attacked her with a sickle. He fled the spot, after injuring her.
The police registered a case under section 294 (b), 324 and 506 (ii) of IPC and arrested Chinnakannan, who remanded to the Vellore Central Prison for Men.
Mounting Debt Forces Couple to End Life
Unable to withstand the pressure due to mounting debts, a 32-year-old youth who had borrowed money to make a movie had allegedly committed suicide along with his wife at their house in Athuranvattam, in Jolarpet. The incident came to light during the early hours of Tuesday.
Chenrayan (alias) Ramesh (32), a native of Athuranvattam, and his wife Eswari (27) were found dead at their house on Tuesday. The police attached to Jolarpet Station, on information recovered the bodies and sent them to the Government Hospital in Tirupattur for autopsy. Police said the police had consumed pesticide.
The preliminary inquiry by investigation officer Ravichandran revealed that Ramesh, who aspired to be a cinema director, had been writing stories for several years to make movies. He borrowed money from his friends, relatives and lenders to make movies. However, his efforts had turned futile.
Unable to repay the debts, the couple committed suicide by consuming pesticide, the IO said.
