WARANGAL: An eight-year-old boy, Manda Sridhar, drowned in an abandoned quarry pit near Hasanparti mandal headquarters.His body was found floating in the pit on Tuesday. His parents have been searching for him since Monday and it is suspected that he might had fallen into the trench filled with water after going to attend nature’s call there.Sridhar was studying third class in Hasanparti Government School.The pit was left abandoned after completion of quarrying and it got filled with water eventually.Sridhar’s father, Srinivas, said that they had searched for their son in the village and even near the quarry pit on Monday. “We found a body in the pit on Tuesday morning and identified it as that of our son,” he said crying inconsolably.This paper carried a report ‘Quarry Pits Turn Deathtraps’ two days ago with details about how the pits are proving fatal for people.There are granite quarries in Nellikuduru, Kesamudram, Hasanparti, Dharmasagar, Station Ghanpur, Atmakur mandals in the district. There are complaints that mining officials are letting miners go scot-free even when they are leaving the pits open.According to the rules, after completion of quarrying the pits should be closed either with mud or sand.
