Patna: Today is the first anniversary of liquor ban in Bihar and the people especially women are talking about its positive effect and how their lives have changed after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s historic decision.
Bihar government had imposed a ban on sale and manufacturing of liquor on April 5, 2016.
Before alcohol ban, it is said, there used to be daily fights and domestic violence cases which seems to have now abated.
News18 spoke to several people in slum colonies near Bailey Road in Patna to know their view on the issue and how their lives were changed.
"After alcohol ban, there is a great deal of change in our lives. It's was a great decision by Nitish Kumar. Our kids are now going to school. There is no shortage of food and vegetables at our homes which was a routine earlier," Said Champa Devi, a slum resident.
Another woman Rekha Devi says, "Now there is no fight with at home. My husband has given up his drinking habit. Earlier, I was afraid to step out of home."
Veena Devi, who runs a tea stall is happy with CM Nitish Kumar's decision.
"We cannot deny that liquor ban has changed our lives. But more needs to be done. I would be happy if the ban is enforced strictly," said Veena.
However, another woman from the same slum colony questions the poor implementation of the policy.
"What is the use of liquor ban when there is free flow of illegal alcohol. Liquor bottles worth Rs 150 are going for Rs 1500. Liquor ban should be strictly enforced," said Indu Devi.
Manoj Singh, who was a habitual drinker, is happy with alcohol ban.
"I am happy with the ban. Earlier, I used to spend all money on liquor but now I am able to save some money."
