New Delhi: Social activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption protests at New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, that has galvanized civil society, may have taken the shine off an otherwise packed weekend with multiple big-budget international releases hitting the cinema theatres on Friday.
While filming for his 'Not A Love Story', director Ram Gopal Varma blogged about his fascination with a 2008 incident that shook up an entire nation. The controversial thriller 'Not A Love Story' is said to be inspired by the brutal killing of a Delhi-based TV producer Neeraj Grover.
Varma turned the real life incident involving "two very ordinary people who one morning go completely bizarre and do such a terrible thing, which a normal person cannot imagine" into a hair-raising story that provoked angry reactions from right wing groups at the time of the film's publicity.
The film's plot explores the mental state of a couple who in the summer of 2008 kill a man, have sex in front of the body, cut it into pieces, pack it in a shopping bag and burn the remains in a jungle.
A Mumbai sessions court sentenced accused in the case Emile Jerome to 10 years in jail while Kannada actress and Jerome's girlfriend Maria Susairaj was handed down a sentence of three years in jail for involvement in the crime. Susairaj walked free for already having spent three years behind bars while the case was on.
The Bollywood adaptation of the crime stars Mahie Gill, Deepak Dobriyal and Ajay Gehi. Initial reviews have been favourable and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt even said Varma be given a standing ovation for daring to touch upon a subject most directors would happily skirt.
Sandeep Chowta, whose association with Varma goes back to 'Satya', 'Shool' and 'Jungle', has composed the music for the film.
'Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande'
Actor Parvin Dabas, who endeared himself to a middleclass audience with a brilliant performance in 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', tests his mettle with directorial debut 'Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande' that has an ensemble cast of Vansh Bharadwaj, Ashish Nayyar, Kuldip Ruhil, Sharat Saxena, Anupam Kher, Kiran Juneja and newcomer Tena Desae.
The moral dilemma of KKG is back to haunt Parvin and his gang of friends as they embark on a journey of personal compromises that ultimately transform them as individuals. The film touches upon the burning land acquisition issue.
'Chatur Singh Two Star'
While the 'Agneepath' remake is still on the floors and Sanjay Dutt's sinister look as the film's antagonist aroused a lot of curiosity, the veteran actor will be seen in a completely different role in 'Chatur Singh Two Star'. Though the plot line bears resemblance to the famous Pink Panther saga, but the filmmakers have vehemently maintained that Dutt's character of a bumbling police detective is an adaptation of a novel.
Ameesha Patel, missing in action for a very long time, is back with a bang in the Ajay Chandok film. Dutt plays an infamous member of the Mumbai Police Department who has a knack for upsetting the best laid plans. The comedy also stars Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Shakti Kapoor, Satish Kaushik and Murli Sharma.
What's in store in Hollywood
Hollywood is packed with some risque action this weekend as Cameron Diaz, dumped by her sugar daddy, takes on the role of a 'Bad Teacher' to woo Justin Timberlake. Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey - a poor Chicago area teacher who curses at her students, drinks heavily, and takes copious amounts of drugs – in the black comedy directed by Jake Kasdan based on a screenplay by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.
'Fright Night,' a 3D update of the 1985 comedy cult favorite, stars Collin Farrell as Jerry, a sinister vampire who moves in next door to a naive high school student played by Anton Yelchin and his mother, played by Toni Collette. When no one will believe him, Yelchin tries on his own to unmask Farrell and explain the mysterious disappearances in his locality and school.
Dominic Cooper definitely comes of age in The Devil's Double, the story of the body double of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic and playboy son Uday. The film also stars Philip Quast, Ludivine Sagnier and Raad Rawi. The horrific atrocities committed by Uday during Saddam’s reign are outed by his body double Latif Yahia.
For children, the weekend brings a 4D experience in 'Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World' that has Jessica Alba playing the role of Marissa Cortez Wilson a new mother and stepmother married to a famous spy hunting television reporter. A retired spy herself, Marissa's world is about to change with some unusual incidents in her life. This is the first movie in 4D or Aromascope - where scratch and sniff cards are used for effects.
