ANGUL: A tusker was killed on Wednesday after it came in contact with a live wire laid by some people near Para village under Durgapur range of Angul forest division to keep wild animals away from human habitations and crop fields. One Rushove Behera has been arrested and more arrests in the case are expected, said forest officials. This is the second such incident in a year. Earlier, an elephant died under similar circumstances at a spot which is just a few yards from the present incident site. As per official reports, six elephants have died in the last one and a half years in Angul and Satkosia forest divisions due to electrocution. Expressing concern over the rising incidents, district wildlife warden Prashana Behera said massive awareness campaigns need to be initiated in the villages located near forest to prevent such incidents. Meanwhile, forest officials have started an inquiry into the incident.“We are examining any lapse on our side. Anybody found guilty will be punished,” said Pandab Behera, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forest.
