BANGALORE: Transport minister R Ashok visited metro stations in order to inspect their level of readiness in time for the October 20 launch on Monday MG Road station was visited by officials from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Bangalore City Police and the mayor as part of a pre-launch inspection which was performed by the Transport Minister.The minister took a tour of the forecourt before moving on to the surrounding roads all the while asking questions about the state of readiness of the station in time for the launch on 20th.He took special notice of the pillars of the metro line and instructed BMRCL officials to ensure that they are maintained by them in a proper manner and also directed the BBMP officials to impose heavy fines on people who stick bills on the pillars.BMRCL MD Srisailam underlined plans to landscape the dividers on MG Road with various plants in due time in order to increase the beauty of the area.“These plants would also serve to decrease the glare coming from vehicles in the opposite lane,” he said.Options being considered for the landscaping are Bougainvillas or Bamboo shoots.He also pointed out that palm trees are being used inside the station.BBMP commissioner Siddaiah stated that the BBMP would undertake the cleaning of the roads around the station and the filling up of potholes.He also said that the Palike would ensure that the footpath leading to Trinity Church Station would be cleaned of weeds and water logging within the next 15 days. The issue of dripping water from the Metro lines which falls on the riders using MG Road was also raised.BMRCL officials however, maintained that the gap between sections of the line was necessary in order to accommodate expansion. Siddiah suggested using a different method of road laying in order to reduce the damage that would be caused by the water.Srisailam also pointed out various rainwater harvesting measures that the BMRCL would undertake in the long term and for which preparations are already underway.“We will make efforts to ensure that the traffic which was diverted all these days for construction will now be returned to normal in a staged way, the function might be held at the Manekshaw Parade grounds,” said Ashok.The delegation then headed off to Byappanahalli to carry on the inspection work.
