BANGALORE: Bangalore has earned the dubious tag of “suicide capital” for the second year running. According to the report released by the National Crime Records Bureau in Delhi on Thursday, the city reported 1,778 cases in 2010.The report, which was released by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, stated that Chennai with 1,325 cases stood second, while Delhi with 1,242 cases was at the third place. The country’s financial capital, Mumbai was at fourth place with 1,192 cases reported. The report also said that the four major cities, including Bangalore, contributed to over 40 per cent of the total suicides from the 35 mega cities. Among states, Tamil Nadu (12.3 per cent), West Bengal (11.9 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (11.8 per cent), Maharashtra (11.8 per cent) and Karnataka (9.4 per cent) contributed 57.2 per cent of the total suicide victims, according to the report. Nearly 70.5 per cent of the suicide victims were married males, while 67.0 per cent were married females. The report also stated that 1,34,599 committed suicide in 2010. The NCRB report also stated that Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu accounted for over 65 per cent of suicide victims in the age group of 60 years and above. What’s more startling is that the report also indicates that there are 15 suicides taking place in the country every hour. While the major reasons cited are economic and social problems for men, emotional challenges are cited as one of the main reasons for suicide among women in the country.Lack of support: Attributing suicides to the nuclear family system, Dr B N Gangadhar, professor of Psychiatry at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, said that in the absence of emotional and social support, there is a spike in the number of such cases. When suicidal thoughts strike, the person feels alone as he does not find anyone to share his feelings with. Besides, high alcohol consumption and stress are also the leading causes of suicides among young adults.
