BANGALORE: Bangalore tops the list of 500 most corrupt cities in the country, according to the number of cases registered at www.ipaidabribe.com. Ever since its launch in August 2010, a total of 14,582 bribe reports, with a value of Rs 509,541,307 have been registered on the website. Of these, 3,994 cases with bribes amounting to Rs 1,102 lakh are from Bangalore alone, with the police department (with a total of 1,274 cases) topping in taking bribes.The latest registered case was an amount of Rs 200 taken as bribe by the police in Malleswaram for passport verification in September. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike wasn’t far behind with a total of 423 bribe reports registered.The website www.ipaidabribe.com, an initiative of Janaagraha, working for improving the quality of citizenship, infrastructure and services, tackles corruption by tapping into the energy of citizens, most of whom are either victims, perpetrators or beneficiaries.“We have a team of in-house researchers who pull out the cases and sort out data according to the department and the city,” said, T R Raghunandan, spokesperson for www.ipaidabribe.com.About the idea, Raghunandan told Express, “It commenced with a discussion between co-founders of Janaagraha, Swati and Ramesh Ramanathan and Sridar Iyengar, a board member of Janaagraha regarding corruption that was destroying city life and disempowering citizens.”“Citizens can share their case by logging on to the website and click the tab I Paid a Bribe,” he said.
