Baramullah Jawan Died As Terrorists Lobbed Grenade at Him: BSF Chief

New Delhi:The head of Border Security Force (BSF) KK Sharma has clarified that BSF lost its constable in the attack on the Rashtriya Rifles camp in Baramulla on Sunday night after terrorists lobbed grenades at him, rubbishing speculation that there was a case of friendly fire.

"Constable Nitin was on duty on one of the morchas of 46 battalion RR camp where the BSF was also staying for road-opening duties and therefore they were also securing the area. On that night, BSF constable Nitin felt there was some movement outside. He went out to check and was fired upon and one of the grenades hit him in the groin. There was blood loss because of splinter injury and he succumbed," Director General of Border Security Forces (BSF) KK Sharma told CNN-News18.

Sharma said even though there was no independent eye witness account of what really happened, Nitin’s BSF colleagues on duty that night had told BSF officers the sequence of events.

“It was pitch dark at night around 10:30 p.m. when the firing began. It was a day after Amavasya, so it was a moonless night. In these circumstances it is very difficult to say where the fire came from,” Sharma said.

"There is no truth in allegations of friendly fire or fire from Indian army killing Nitin. As usually happens in a situation like this there is a lot of running around, lot of confusion. So no one is in a position to say exactly where the fire came from or who were the terrorists," he said.

The morning after the Baramulah attack, Union Home Ministry spokesperson K Dhatwalia had told news agency PTI that two terrorists were killed during the operation. However, he later said that the report of the killing of two terrorists was a "claim" and it was being "verified".

BSF chief Sharma said that he cannot confirm how many terrorists had attacked the RR headquarters, if any were killed or the circumstances under which they fled from the area.
