HYDERABAD: Though the traffic police are aware of many persons using beacon lights on their vehicles illegally, they are unable to take action as the General Administration department is sitting over the file, seeking authorisation for police to detain such vehicles.Several months ago, when traffic police conducted a drive against vehicles using beacons illegally, officials of the department had interfered and ordered police stop the drive for two months. “The GAD officials said since several requests had come from various persons to permit them to use beacons on their vehicles, a decision will be taken in two months. But though its been more than six months, officials are yet to take any decision,” a senior traffic police told Express.“We also sent a reminder recently to GAD officials to take a decision so that erring motorists can be nabbed. In fact this can pose a serious security threat especially in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the city,” an official added. Traffic officials said though the implications were explained to the GAD officials, they gave weight to few influential persons who had got habituated to using beacons, mostly as a prestige symbol and shelved the proposal by not taking any decision.Police said there are clear directions about who should use beacons. Officials said only the governor, chief minister, Cabinet ministers, the speaker, opposition leader, chief justice of the High Court, director-general of police and few others are eligible to use beacon lights. But many persons are using beacons illegally, without proper permission.
