BANGALORE: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom), as part of its corporate social responsibility, will adopt 26 government schools which have more girl students. While Bescom will spend Rs 1 lakh on each school, officers are free to mobilise whatever resources possible for the children. Apart from this, during free time, officers will also visit the schools and take classes as part of knowledge improvement mission. There are 26 divisions in Bescom and each division will adopt one school. The idea of adopting government schools evolved recently when a group of 17 officers belonging to Bangalore City Division visited a home for aged in Koramangala, run by a Christian missionary, cooked food and served the inmates. They had spent Rs 15,000 on the activity. When the officers shared their experiences with Bescom managing director P Manivannan, he came out with the idea of adopting government schools. The subject was placed in the following board meeting chaired by Shamim Banu, additional chief secretary, Department of Energy, and it was unanimously resolved to spend Rs 1 lakh on each school from the board. The ground work for this corporate social responsibility scheme was worked out by Ravi, general manager of corporate affairs, Bescom.Manivannan told Express that tenders are being floated in a week’s time to fix an agency or a non-governmental organisation to manage the show since it was not possible for the officers to monitor activities daily. While the board will release Rs 26 lakh from its kitty, officers can pool in Rs 1 lakh so that a substantial amount is made available for the scheme.“Many companies are helping improve infrastructure, especially in government schools. However, our officers will go a step ahead and take classes to share their knowledge with them. There is no dearth of resource persons in Bescom and our endeavour is to motivate children,” he said.
