Bhopal: Bhopal’s old jail which is a British-era structure is all set to be functional once again, almost 24 years after the Central Jail shifted.

The jail administration has based their decision to overcrowding in Central Jail, especially after 139 prisoners were shifted to from Vidisha where one of the jail walls had collapsed recently.

Out of these 139 inmates, 64 are serving sentences while 75 are under trials.

These are other under trails would be shifted to this jail, an officer from the jail department said.

However, the jail administration’s decision also pre-empted a move from Bhopal Development Authority (BDA) which approached government with the request for land on which the old jail sits.

Barring some instances when the jail compound plays makeshift counting site for State Election commission during assembly polls, the jail department building remains deserted.

“Overcrowding at Bhopal Central Jail has forced us to renovate this old jail. This would be opened from May 1,” said ADG (Jails) JR Meena.
