BANGALORE: The members of the Bangalore University Non-Teaching Staff Association staged a protest on Jnanabharathi campus on Monday and submitted a list of demands to Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev.The demands include basic amenities at Jnanabharathi and Central College campuses, improvement of administrative buildings, provision of health insurance for employees and filling up of vacant posts, promotions.“There has been a tendency to simply outsource basic functions, ignoring the hundreds of administrative staff who work here,” said vice-president of the association and Deputy Registrar of the university Shivanna.“Ever since the VC took over, many university projects have been outsourced and the needs of regular employees like us have been constantly ignored,” he alleged.“Some of these works have been approved only on paper issues such as promotions and suspension of a few employees, who are responsible for outsourcing of activities, particularly exam-related work is still pending,” said Shivanna. The Bangalore University Teachers Council also joined the protest. The president of the council Munirajappa urged the authorities to look into the pending UVCE promotions and UGC wages.Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prabhu Dev shot off a letter calling the strike “not justified.”“The strike call given by the association is not justified as I have addressed almost all the genuine demands within the ambit of relevant rules, regulations and statues of the university,” he stated. He said he had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Syndicate member Dr Manasa Nagabhushanam to resolve all the demands on April 28. “As far as the demands of the teachers council are concerned, I have constituted another committee. As nothing was heard from the committees, I have personally addressed most of the concerns,” he stated. The employees said that the protest would resume again from Wednesday.
