PUDUCHERRY: A tree plantation drive marked the World Environment Day celebrations here on Sunday, aimed at spreading awareness of the benefits of sustainable afforestation.Pondicherry Urban Development Agency (PUDA) director Balasubramanian planted the first sapling to kick off the initiative promoted by the Puducherry Municipal Services Pvt Ltd (PMSPL).Addressing the event, Balasubramanian said Puducherry government always welcomed the participation of private organisations to protect the environment and enable society to assure the next generation a good and healthy life.Sudheesh P V, director of PMSPL, said his firm actively pursued initiatives and practices that had a direct impact on the long-term needs of the environment. He claimed that such initiatives played an important role in raising awareness of key environmental issues and challenges and motivating individuals to take positive steps towards sustainability and environmental excellence in their homes, schools, workplaces and communities.
