Around 200 students from 11 schools in the city let their imagination fly during the World Nature Conservation Day celebrations here on Saturday. Observed every year on July 28, this year was even more special as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)– India, in collaboration with the Government Museum, Chennai, organised a painting competition on the topic ‘nature conservation’.
The on-the-spot competition saw some young aspiring artists painting their hearts out about different topics such as global warming, climate change and recycling among others. The event also had a presentation on ‘Wildlife and Nature Conservation’ by Gomathi, Interpretation Executive, Adyar Poonga Trust. Students interacted with Gomathi enquiring about ways of preserving nature.
Short films on climate change and nature conservation were screened for the students. S S Jawahar, Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums, and ‘Veena’ Gayathri, Honorary Director, Government Music College, were the chief guests and judges of the competition.
Addressing the students, Jawahar said that the Egmore Museum was one of the biggest museums in India with 47 galleries.
“Instead of studying two dimensional objects from books, one must learn from the three-dimensional crafts at a museum,” he said and added that students should not miss the opportunities that a museum offers to understand things better.
Vijayabharathi, state co-ordinator of WWF, said, “More than a painting competition, this is an initiative to create awareness about all the ecological issues we are facing today. I hope the students learn as much as they can from this.”
