With the Olympics just six-and-a-half weeks away, security in Beijing is unprecedented. Soldiers are on drill and camouflage netting covers most hardware. A fenced-off compound has been set up just south of the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, a venue for soccer and modern pentathlon.
Beijing has cited terror threats as the reasons for these measures. It is also raising a specialist anti-terrorism force specifically for the Olympics. But memories of the protests earlier this year by Free Tibet activists is evidently still fresh. One of the components of this force is the paramilitary Snow Wolf Commando Unit, which is trained in riot control.
Human rights groups allege that the intense security arrangements are meant to suppress protesters as much as they are meant to avert possible terror strikes during the games.
