KOCHI: To solve the garbage woes that still plague the Brahmapuram Solid Waste Treatment Plant, the Kochi Corporation will construct a new plant at an elevated land adjacent to the existing plant. The civic body will soon invite an Expression of Interest (EoI) from leading technical agencies for undertaking the construction of the new plant. The decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. The condition of the existing plant at Brahmapuram is pathetic and the plant has turned into a dump. The Chief Minister’s decision to convene the meeting came after the local people and students from schools near the plant complained about the stink and housefly menace.Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany after the meeting told ‘City Express’ that the civic body will soon call for the EoI for the new plant.“Our plan is to set up a new plant on an elevated land adjacent to the existing one. The present plant, which is situated on a low-lying wetland, is in a dilapidated condition and has sunk. So, the only feasible idea will be the construction of a new plant,” the Mayor said. He said that the technology to be adapted for the new plant, the cost estimate and other technical and financial details of the project will be finalised only after discussing at the Corporation Council.“We have already been allotted funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme for the solid waste management. So, the project is financially feasible. The Corporation owns more than 1000 acres of land at Brahmapuram. We are hopeful of constructing the new plant without much delay,” the Mayor said. The meeting held at the capital city was attended by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor B Bhadra, MLAs including Benny Behnan, Hibi Eden and Dominic Presentation, Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf, Town Planning Standing Committee chairman K J Sohan and Works Standing Committee chairperson Saumini Jain.
