KARUR: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) caught red-handed the Commissioner of Kadavur panchayat union and an Assistant Block Development Officer for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a contractor. During the recent civic polls, small boxes were made for sorting out the ballot papers which were manufactured by Krishnan, a saw mill proprietor of Tharagampatti, on contract basis. After the polls were over, Krishnan had approached Commissioner Govindaraj and Assistant BDO Mahalingam, presenting a bill for Rs 1.15 lakh towards the cost of materials supplied. The two officials had allegedly wanted their palms greased and demanded Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Krishnan was told to accept the first instalment of Rs 65,600 on Wednesday at the union office. Meanwhile, Krishnan had lodged a complaint with DVAC DSP Rama Ambikapathy. The latter had advised Krishnan to part with the bribe money while accepting his payment. The advice was carried out and the sleuths caught the duo red-handed. A further raid revealed an unaccounted amount of Rs 20,000 from them. The duo were produced at the special court in Tiruchy.
