Srinagar: The overall situation remained by and large peaceful on Friday in the Kashmir Valley. The authorities had imposed strict restrictions to stop the separatist-sponsored march to Pulwama against the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian.

The clash occurred when police tried to stop the locals from taking out a procession to register their protest against the Shopian incident, said official sources.

The Incident happened at Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar shortly after Friday prayers.

Police fired a few teargas shells and used batons to disperse the procession, led by Chief Priest of the Jamia Masjid Imam Hai who has criticised the government for arresting the separatist leaders.

While over a dozen separatist leaders, including Chairman of Hardline Hurriyat Syed Ali Shah Geelani have been arrested, the rest of the leaders including moderate Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik continued to be under house arrest for the last two weeks.

"This is the second Friday in which Mirwaiz Umer could not deliver the sermon at Jamia Masjid. Stopping anybody from his religious duty tantamounts to interference in religious.
