CHENNAI: The future of key CMDA department, which helps the Chennai Metro Rail go ahead with the project without hindrances, is hanging in balance. The Metro Rail Unit in the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is yet to receive an extension three months after its one-year term came to end on June 21. The government was requested in June to extend the unit’s tenure by another year, sources said. The unit has achived many tasks, such as  handing over of land to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for a depot in Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC), diversion of traffic during construction works and building of new roads in KWMC and Koyambedu Bus Stand areas as part of the ongoing works. While the Chennai Metro Rail reimburses 75 per cent of expenses on the Metro Rail Unit’s 9 staff members, the CMDA bears the balance 25 per cent of the expenses, besides full expenditure on the Chief Accounts Officer. The  continuance of the Metro Rail Unit for a period of one year was necessary for expediting follow-up actions like integration of the metro system with vital infrastructure facilities. These are improving accessibility, pedestrian facilities and inter-modal integration apart from restructuring road network. The CMRL had recommended continuing the   Metro Rail Unit with 10 staff members for a period of one year .
