Congress has criticised UP's Samajwadi Party for the large-scale irregularities during the local body elections.

Allahabad: Congress has criticised the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh for the large-scale irregularities during the local body elections and said it would consider supporting a no-confidence motion, if brought by other opposition parties on the issue.

It would also launch a 'jail bharo' (court arrest) programme on November 20 in protest against poll irregularities, UPCC president Salman Khursheed said.

"After the civic polls, we have lost all hope of propriety of conduct from the ruling SP. We have not brought a no-confidence motion in the assembly as we do not have the requisite support. However, if it is brought about by other opposition parties, we may consider supporting the same," he said.

He said the Congress' support to any such motion would be confined to the alleged irregularities during the local body polls and the party would not back the motion "if it is brought on any other issue".

Khurshid said his party was not pressing for President's rule in the UP, "as following the S R Bommai case and last year's Bihar episode, it would not be wise to propose any such action unless there is a strong evidence of breakdown of the constitutional machinery in the state".

"The jail bharo programme would start from Jhansi, where we have won the mayoral seat, and would be extended to the entire Bundelkhand region and some parts of western Uttar Pradesh. On November 27, the Congress would hold a number of dharnas and demonstrations across Lucknow," Khurshid said.
