Vellore police have cracked a murder case of a 22-year-old youth, Vinod Kumar, who was hacked to death and beheaded two-and-a-half years ago, following the arrest of three persons hailing from Melmonavoor, on Wednesday.
A special team led by deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Vellore, S Dakshnamoorthy nabbed Mark (52), Muthu (26) and Prabhu (27), all neighbours of Vinod Kumar, for hacking him to death on November 30, 2009. “The motive behind the murder was an illegal affair,” said superintendent of police, I Eswaran.
The enquiry into the murder of Vinod revealed that he had had an affair with Mark’s daughter, which he continued even after she got married to another man.
Though Mark dissuaded Vinod from continuing the affair with his daughter, he continued. He had also tried to sexually abuse his friend, Muthu’s sister, despite the latter warning him. “Mark and Muthu had decided to get rid of Vinod and eliminated him on November 30, 2009, with the help of Prabhu,” said the SP.
Police said, as per their plan, Muthu and Prabhu took him to a lonely place at Kezhmonavoor on the pretext of having a chat with him. Mark had brought a sickle and after they reached the place, the trio hacked him to death. “They beheaded Vinod and packed the head and body separately in two plastic bags along with his college ID card, ATM card and family photograph. The bags were dumped in Ekambaram’s well.
Boulders were tied to the bags to ensure that they did not float to the top,” said the SP. Vinod completed college education and was working in a shop on Katpadi Road. However, he carried his ID card in his wallet.
Vinod’s father Sampath had lodged a complaint with Virinichipuram police about the mysterious disappearance of his son. The police registered the case but failed to find him.
“The murder came to light after the well went dry,” said the SP. Ekambaram noticed the skeletal remains in his well on August 3 this year, and alerted the police. “The ID card, ATM card and photograph which was found in one of the gunny bags helped us confirm that the skeletal remains were that of Vinod,” said DSP Dakshnamoorthy.
The police converted the man-missing case into a murder case and launched a fresh investigation. “We suspected an illegal affair would be the motive behind the murder based on the character of the deceased. We investigated in that angle and cracked the case,” added the DSP.
The police picked up the trio on Wednesday at Poigai and they confessed to the crime. Following that, police registered a case against them under section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence in an offence) of IPC. They have been remanded to prison.
Eswaran said they have sent the skull for superimposition and the femur bone for DNA test.
