MADURAI: A court here granted police custody of the headmaster of Government High School in Podhumbu village in a sexual abuse case, on Wednesday.M Arockiasamy (54), the suspended HM, was produced before Magistrate Sujatha of Judicial Magistrate (JM) Court-6 after a case was filed against him for sexually abusing several students of Government High School in Podhumbu.The Investigation Officer, Surya Kala, filed a petition seeking the custody of Arockiasamy before Magistrate Sujatha, on Tuesday.Admitting the petition, the Magistrate deferred the hearing to Wednesday after hearing.Arockiasamy had argued stating that he was innocent of all the charges framed against him by the police.She granted police custody of Arockiasamy for one day and ordered the Rural Police to produce the accused at 12.15 pm before the court.She also allowed the defence counsel to meet the accused at Samayanallur Police Station for 15 minutes. Advocate Gnanaprakasam who represented the accused was given time between 9 am and 9.15 am to meet the accused during the custody.However, the defence lawyer objected to the grant of police custody on grounds that the accused was having health problems and if sent to police custody it would lead to complications. But, the Magistrate observed that the defence lawyer cannot interfere in the investigation process of the police.Meanwhile, the accused argued that he was being treated as a heinous offender by the police. Claiming that he was a literate, he prayed before the Magistrate to order the police not to handcuff him, while being produced before the court and also assured that he would extend his full cooperation to the police in the investigation.The Magistrate ordered the accused to file this as a petition before the court.
