KOCHI: The Ernakulam Boat Jetty which lacked electricity and water supply, is all set to get a fresh lease of life. Kochi Corporation gave its nod to provide temporary electricity and water supply to the boat jetty in a meeting convened on Thursday. It will add to the safety and comfort of many who avail boat services here.According to Hibi Eden MLA, who called a meeting that included the Mayor, the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD) officials and the Kerala Tourism officials, the Corporation has also agreed to set up an additional high mass light at the entrance of the jetty.“We had been receiving complaints regarding anti-social activities taking place at the Jetty during the night hours,” Hibi Eden added. “The jetty is surrounded by overgrown grass and muddy pathways. It is very difficult to walk down the path and one is always scared of tripping. This is a welcome relief,” said George K, a daily passenger. The tourism officials said that once the connections are set, they will be able to kick-start activities at the five kiosks set in 2009 by the tourism department eyeing the large tourism potential at the jetty. Also, well-lit pathways, book stores, toilets etc will be set up.The ongoing dispute between Kerala State Water Transport Department and Kerala Tourism Department, which had begun in 2009 over the ownership rights, had led to the neglect of the boat jetty. “Whenever we approached the local authorities to provide us connections at the jetty, they cited ownership issues,” said Shine, Tourism Information Officer. Even today, the disputes remain unresolved. Hibi Eden has called a meeting next week in the presence of the Chief Minister, tourism officials and the KSWTD authorities to discuss the ownership issues.
