Delhi Police chief to meet Kejriwal, brief him on the progress of 19-year-old girl's murder probe
AAP has been at loggerheads with Delhi Police over a number of issues and the party has stepped up its attack against it after arrest of two of its MLAs.

New Delhi: There is no end to politics over the brutal murder of a young girl who was stabbed 35 times in Delhi's Anand Parbat locality for standing up against sexual assault.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be meeting Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi on Monday to give a progress report on the case. Bassi has said that he will try to dispel "misconceptions" about functioning of his force in his meeting with the Chief Minister. He is likely to explain the CM about the steps being taken to improve the law and order situation in the national capital.

"I will definitely go and meet him and will exchange our thoughts...There is a possibility of him telling something useful to us and may be I will give him something which will make him informative towards policing because I have been working for 38 years in the department. As a professional police officer it is my duty that I should remove any misconceptions about policing. I have a good opportunity with the meeting to clear misconception if any," Bassi said.

Bassi has said that there is no need for implementing AAP's demand for bringing Delhi Police under the city government. Currently Delhi Police functions directly under administrative control of the Home Ministry.

"The mechanism at present is appropriate. This was no knee-jerk reaction when the G D Khosla Committee introduced the commissionerate in Delhi, after deliberation and examination of witnesses, the Parliament Act of 1978 was formed. Any attempt to tinker with the mechanism will be injustice to Delhi residents and can be dangerous," he said.

Keeping up his tirade against the Centre on functioning of Delhi Police, Kejriwal has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into his demand seriously, alleging that law and order situation in the capital was "on a decline".

"I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi with folded hands that the control of Delhi Police be handed over to us. He has to run the complete country. I am not saying Delhi Police officials are wrong. They are very good people and are working but the system is bad. Even Police officials themselves are frustrated with this and no improvement is happening," he claimed.

Terming the murder of the girl as "shocking", Kejriwal saidcrime-related incidents were "increasing" and women do not feel safe and "whenever we talk to senior police officials, they have one answer that they are under the Centre's control."

Nineteen-year-old Minakshi was brutally stabbed to death allegedly by two brothers living in her neighbourhood in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area for protesting their verbally abusing her on July 16.

AAP has been at loggerheads with Delhi Police over a number of issues and the party has stepped up its attack against it after arrest of two of its MLAs. It has been accusing Delhi Police of "bias" against it, saying, its MLAs are being "targeted" under political pressure.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members also staged a protest on Sunday against Delhi Police holding it responsible for the incident, saying it has "failed" to provide security to women.

Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay and Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) Chief Ajay Maken visited the girl's residence, a day after Kejriwal visited the family.

Maken, meanwhile, accused Kejriwal of trying to "gain political mileage" out of the girl's death while at the same time slammed Delhi Police for "failing" to provide adequate security to women. "I consider the police responsible. I also hold Arvind Kejriwal responsible for blame game," he said.

Commenting on the issue, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that systemic changes are required to deal with the issue of women security and pitched for setting up of a commission to bring changes in functioning of police.

"There is some shortcoming in the system which is why it is not able to handle. Politicising it and blaming each other will not lead to solutions. A commission must be set up to oversee what change must be brought about in police training, how police responds to situations like these, and also to look at how various gadgets can be used such as drones and CCTVs so that quick action can be taken," said Dikshit, who had also raised the issue of functioning of police during her chief ministership.

After visiting the girl's family, the Delhi BJP chief said there was a need for action to be taken against those responsible for the incident. "As the chief of Delhi BJP, I would advise Delhi Police to be more alert and proactive," he said.

Kejriwal has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the girl and ordered a magisterial probe into the case while slamming Delhi Police for "deteriorating" law and order situation
