BANGALORE:  The High Court on Thursday directed the State Government not to demolish structures at the Siddalingeshwara shrine at Yediyur in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur  district in the name of renovation and stated that it is of historical significance. The division bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice A S Bopanna, hearing a petition filed by Niranjana Jagadguru Jayamruthyunjaya Swamiji of Panchamasali Math at Koodalasangama, directed the officials to demolish only parts outside the temple which were constructed recently and avoid destruction of the 500-year -old sanctum sanctorum. However, the court permitted the State Government to renovate the structures of the temple which were constructed recently. The temple in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district was in the news since 2009 after the government decided to renovate it at a cost of `4.95 crore. Following the High Court’s directions, the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) filed report on the renovation of the Siddalingeshwara shrine, including its historical significance and method of renovation. The ASI, in its report, had stated that the sanctum sanctorum was constructed in 1470 AD, the stone mantap in the 16th century and the rest in the 19th century. The petitioners contended that their apprehensions came true, when the renovation work began when the pillars were brought in and stored to replace the pillars in stone mantap which were installed in the 16th century. The court took note of their contentions.
