KOZHIKODE: The incident of trafficking psychotropic substances in large quantities from Mysore and other parts of Karnataka, aiming the students and youths in Kozhikode and nearby districts, has become rampant. The drug sellers is procuring tablets such as Spasmo Proxyvon, Nitrazepam and Nitravet, from areas in Karnataka where medical shops do not insist on doctor’s prescriptions, according to police officials.Young boys are tempted by convincing that the tablets would make them ‘muscle man’ while girls are offered to be slim forever if these drugs are used, the police said. Due to the sedative nature of these drugs, the users get high. Continuous use of these drugs would make ill-effects on brain, kidney and liver,” said Kozhikode Town CI Ashraf Thengalakkandiyil.“An average of 5-6 drug peddling cases has been registered in a month in Kozhikode city. When addiction level develops, the customers would take 20 tablets a day,” he said. Police said it would not be easy to identify those addicted to these tablets. “The users did not show any symptoms of inebriation. A strip of 10 Spasmo Proxyvon costs `62.50 and these are sold to the student customers for Rs 60 or 70 per tablet. The side effects are urinary retention, restlessness and confusion. Nitrozepam is a hypnotic drug which has sedative and motor-impairing properties. Students could easily deceive teachers and parents by stating that they had a headache. The recent arrest of two persons Badarudheen, a native of Kuttichira, Kozhikode and Unnikrishnan of Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad by the City Shadows police team revealed that several students frequently used psychotropic substances, usually prescribed for those with psychotic disorders. A total number of 6,813 Spasmo Proxyvon and Nitrazepam tablets were recovered from them.“The petty shops near some schools are helping the groups which supplies this type of sedative drugs and police would initiate stringent measures,” said Assistant Commissioner Crime Detachment Pradeep P M.
