CHENNAI: It's not just Interventional cardiologist Dr G Sengottuvelu who says that a healthy diet and resistance training exercises can prevent the recurrence of heart disease. Almost 200 of his healthier heart patients from the city and the rest of the state who arrived for a workshop on 'The Way to Heart Health' agree with him unanimously. Interestingly, he prescribes exercises that are not too slow for his middle-aged heart patients nor are too strenuous for his elderly set. “You can’t ask elder people to start lifting barbells immediately after a heart surgery. But over a course of six weeks, with the proper equipment, they can begin to try these and it will help," he says.Demonstrating the ideal dietary options that people can indulge in, over breakfast on Sunday morning, he explains to them how switching from Indian breakfasts to a combination of oats, boiled vegetables and fruits can increase their longevity of life. A senior consultant at Apollo Hospitals as well as one of the most respected people with regard to stent-angiploasty, Dr Sengottuvelu says he organised the workshop to not only ensure his patients were in good health but also to maintain ties with them.Dr Padma Subramanian, who inaugurated the session, spoke about how wellness in the heart began not just physically but also psychologically when people spoke to their hearts. Actor Sivakumar, who also spoke to the patients about how a proper fitness regimen still ensured his health was steadfast, released a booklet on 'all you need to know about heart attacks', written by the doctor. The most interesting point in the booklet, besides the medical facts, is that it concedes that if people must consume liquor, they must limit it to two drinks a day.
