Extortion racket busted, 3 held

Yet another extortion racket has come to the fore with the arrest of three persons on Saturday in connection with a bus burning incident at 100 Feet Road in May.

Mudaliarpet Circle Inspector C Maran said that Prakash (22) of Amma Nagar Moolakulam, Patrick (19) of Virudhanagar and Madhavan (19) of Rodierpet allegedly set fire to a private bus owned by JK bus service.

The trio was hired by deceased history sheeter Jegan after the bus company refused to pay an extortion amount of Rs 3 lakhs demanded. It was revealed during interrogation that the three were paid  Rs 10,000 each for the job.

It took the police four months to crack the case since the bus owners did not disclose the extortion angle then. Three other persons who are suspected to be involved in the extortion would be arrested shortly, said Maran.

There has been a spurt in the number of extortion threats received by traders from rowdy gangs in the recent months.

The Chamber of Commerce had in the past approached the government authorities demanding stern action against the rowdy elements that were issuing extortion threats, while seeking protection to their life and trade.
