CHENNAI: The Indian Vegetarian Congress celebrated World Vegetarian Week recently at the AVM Rajeswari Kalyanamandapam, RK Salai. The Congress held various contests for kids and adults to spread vegetarianism and educate people on mandatory vegetarian branding on consumer products, With three successful Congress sessions and six national conventions, the turnout for the event was overwhelming, with students from schools across the city enthusiastically participating in drawing, poster making and fancy dress competitions. A not-so-size-zero kid dressed as Kareena Kapoor for the fancy dress, spoke about the benefits the actress received in the film industry and personal life by being a vegetarian. At the mention of Saif Ali Khan, there was a tepid murmur from the audience, with the Kareena-dressed kid flipping her hair and walking off the stage. A bear in an over-sized costume and cute whiskers froze on the stage, forgetting his lines, and had to be carried away. A banana, looking almost life-like, spoke of its nutritional benefits. Of course, there were the usual Gandhijis and other leaders. At the art contests, kids got creative by using recyclable material to create works of art. A kid painted an old shoe, made it look presentable and passed it off for a pen holder. The most used materials were paper cups, broken bangles and ice cream sticks, with a tonne of colourful glitter and decorative paper to add shine to the art works. For older participants, a cooking contest was held under four categories of cuisine, which included Indian, South East Asian, International Cuisine, and desserts and sweets of the world.The event was inaugurated by M Narendra, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Overseas Bank. It had SP Sharma, Inspector General, Commander Coast Guard Region, as the guest of honour. R Ashok Kumar Mehta, Chairman, Jain Group of Companies, was also present.
