CHENNAI: A fertility research centre dedicated to providing natural cycle In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) was inaugurated by Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons G Senthamilan at T Nagar on Sunday morning. The Srushti Hospital that was started in 1999 has begun this project to “bring the joys of having a child to the economically struggling classes in Tamil Nadu,” according to its Chairperson, Dr S Chamundi Shankari. While the normal method of IVF is being widely used in fertility centres, the decision to use natural cycle IVF is aimed at minimising the cost and taking it to the masses, she added. “With a price tag of about half a lakh rupees, this costs only a third of what regular IVF would cost,” she said.Besides the cost, the low usage of drugs and lack of side effects are the added advantages of using this method, she reasoned. “We have completed about 300 of these cycles and the results have been promising," says Chamundi. While regular IVF boasts of a 45-48 per cent success rate, this method has yielded 38-40 per cent, she added. The results from the natural cycle IVF will be collated and research will be conducted into the most effective and cost-friendly methods of inducing fertility and child birth.
