BANGALORE: “The Amateur Scientists”, a science fest for schools and colleges, organised by PES Group of Institutions, saw participation from 100 schools and colleges in the city.Students from standard 10, 11 and 12 participated in the science fair which is a first of its kind organised by PES.The major objective of organising the fest was to provide a platform for the students to showcase their talent in various branches of science at a professional level.Prof D Jawahar, director, PES Institutions said, “We are overwhelmed by the response that we have received for the fest.We intend to initiate such events for the school students more often to help them bring out their ideas and thoughts, encourage them at the developing stage, and see to it that their talent does not go unnoticed.” The winning team received a cash prize of `10,000 along with the title of ‘Best School/ College in Science stream in Bangalore’.A cash award of `5,000 each was given away to three runner-up teams.Each team consisted of three members and was given a fully furnished stall which included an area to display their flex banners.Every team, after the selection round was given a chance to showcase the working model of their project and was judged and critiqued by professors.Some of the projects presented by the students were Hydroelectric Power Generating Plant, Water Drop Electrostatic Generator, Traffic Condition Based Signaling System, Planet Roving Vehicle, Quad rotor Helicopter, Chemical Heart Beat and To Extract DNA from Living Tissues0.The judges were Subramaniam, retired IISc professor, Bhama Sridharan, MTech from McGrill University, Canada and presently working in the IISc, Hemanth, PhD, IISc and presently teaching at Central College, Sheshadri, PhD, IT BHU, presently working in DRDO and Sowmyashree, PhD, Michigan Technological University, USA, presently working for Brainstars.RV PU College, MS Ramiah Composite Pre University College, Delhi Public School Bangalore-North, Carmel Convent High School, St Joseph Indian Composite PU College, Cluny Convent High School were some of the participants.
