The British GP is one of the oldest continuously staged Formula One World Championship Grand Prix along with the Italian GP with the first race being held in way back in 1928. The Grand Prix was also designated the European Grand Prix five times between 1950 and 1977 and in its long history, three venues have been part of the British GP.
The first two races of this grand Prix were held at Brooklands, just outside the British capital of London. Brooklands was the first purpose-built motor racing venue, as well as one of the first airfields in the United Kingdom. After Brooklands was severely damaged by the onset of World War II, race was shifted to Silverstone, located in Northamptonshire in central England. In 1955, the race began to alternate between Silverstone and the Aintree circuit (1955-62) and later between Silverstone and Brands Hatch (1963-1986). Brands Hatch was located south of English in the county of Kent. From 1987, Silverstone became the home of British GP and it continues to be so.
Silverstone circuit is known for its smooth curves and has a conventional racing design. Ferrari has been the most successful team here winning 15 races closely followed by McLaren (14). British race driver Jim Clarke and Alan Prost have registered the most wins (5) in the British GP. From the current crop, Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber have won two races each with the Australian being the defending champion heading into the 2013 race.
