New Delhi: Remember the 2004 film 'Garv' starring Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty. Can you recall the director's name?
Let me give you a hint. He had played the ultimate bad boy 'Duryodhana' in B R Chopra's TV epic 'Mahabharat'.
Yes, you guessed it right.
Well, Puneet Issar is returning as director with this week's release 'I Am Singh'.
The story revolves around a young Sikh boy Ranveer Singh who has a well settled business in India. Ranveer's parents decide to visit his restaurateur brothers in America but he prefers to stay at home.
Ranveer receives the shock of his life when a phone call from America says that his brother Bikram is dead while the other brother Balbir is missing.
He leaves for America only to find a mysterious situation where nobody is willing to speak anything about Bikram's death.
A little investigation reveals that Bikram was actually murdered by a group of racist people. Ranveer's quest for justice takes him to a famous and beautiful attorney Amelia Whites.
The fight for equal status for all American citizens starts where Ranveer Singh puts everything on stake.
Gulzar Inder Chahal is playing the central role of Ranveer Singh while Brooke Johnston is all set to appear as Amelia Whites.
Punnet Issar will also be seen in the film as a morally and ethically upright LAPD officer.
It's not the first time when any filmmaker has focussed on the topic of racial discrimination. The Hindi film industry has been producing films like 'Purab Aur Paschim' and 'Kranti' since a long time.
The content and presentation style of films changed as per the changing patterns of racial discrimination in the west. Films such as 'I Proud to Be an Indian', 'Namaste London', and 'Goal' made us aware of the prevailing situations.
Recently released 'Patiala House' also showcased the tussle between two communities in Southhall but not many films have concentrated on the discrimination happening in US.
'New York' and 'My Name Is Khan' showcased the after effects of 9/11 on a certain community but 'I Am Singh' is probably the first film to concentrate on the plights of Sikhs in post WTC era.
Punnet Issar has spent a long time in the film industry and has gathered a huge experience as an actor. Issar is not new to direction either and has given commands to actors like Salman, Shilpa and Amrish Puri.
'Garv' was just a moderate success but this time Issar must be hoping for a good show with 'I Am Singh'.
