To curb the overcharging of the visitors of Sikkim, the state government has fixed taxi fares for the journey between Gangtok and Nathula. According to an official order issued by C S Rao, Principal Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, the round-trip fares for both the normal and luxury vehicles have been set. The normal vehicle round-trip from Gangtok to Nathula has been fixed at Rs 6,000 and for luxury vehicles, it has been set at Rs 7,000. It is inclusive of permit charges.
There have been several complaints by tourists regarding the high prices charged by tour operators in Sikkim. To combat this practice, the state government has taken proactive measures to regulate taxi fares between its capital Gangtok and the popular Nathula Pass. It is also applicable to Tsomgo Point and Baba Mandir Point with immediate effect. The tourist can contact the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department at 9434182178, Police Check Post at 7908081127 and the Transport Department at 9434126821, in case of overcharging fares.
Strict actions will be taken against the travel operators or other people, if they are found violating these rules under the relevant provisions of the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and CMV Rules 1989, and Sikkim Motor Vehicles Rules 1991.
The daily limit of the Nathula permit to be issued by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department is enhanced to 800 vehicles. It will be applicable till June 30. The meeting was held at the high-level meeting on May 24. It is believed that tourism thrives when visitors feel valued and welcomed. In such a situation, these new decisions are expected to enhance the overall tourist experience. With new fares in place, the footfall of the tourists is expected to rise.
