Patna: Touched by the plight of Chuhiya, a girl featured on a poster of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for its campaign against child labour, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has sought a report on the matter and ordered that she be rehabilitated.
Kumar has sought a report from the home commissioner on UNICEF using the six-year-old's picture for its campaign and the failure of authorities to rehabilitate her under the law banning child labour, the chief minister's principal secretary R C P Singh said on Tuesday.
Singh said Kumar has directed that efforts should be made for the proper rehabilitation of Chuhiya, the face of the joint awareness campaign launched by UNICEF and the state government.
Posters featuring her were printed by the UN body and pasted at innumerable places to attract attention to the plight of the faceless multitude of children toiling to make a living.
Weeks have gone by since the campaign was launched but Chuhiya is still awaiting rehabilitation and government help while she cleans utensils at her father's roadside dhaba close to the state headquarters of Bihar's ruling JD-U.
Chuhiya’s was the face UNICEF had very carefully chosen to portray childhood lost in the struggle for survival.
Her father complained that despite his daughter's posters being put up at several places in Bihar's capital, nobody has cared to come to the help of his family.
