Shimla: The Manimahesh lake, one of Himachal Pradesh's most popular pilgrimage centres and tourist spots, will be connected by helicopter services from next week.
The scenic lake, perched high in the Himalayas at an altitude of 4,170 metres, attracts thousands of Hindu pilgrims in September. They take a dip in the lake's icy waters.
The pilgrimage involves a 14.5-km long arduous uphill trek from Bharmaur to reach the lake. But those wishing to skip the long walk can now take a state-owned helicopter from Bharmaur to Gaurikund, at the edge of the circular lake.
A one-way ride will cost Rs.8,000 per passenger. The lake is located in Chamba Valley, 500 km from Shimla.
A state government official said the first flight would take off Monday during the Janmashtami festival.
The service will only operate during the pilgrimage. There will be daily flights, but their number each day would depend on demand.
