Godavari Water Released For Sriram Sagar Project In Nizamabad To Ease Farmers' Struggles
Sriram Sagar is an irrigation project across river Godavari in Telangana to serve irrigational needs in Karimnagar, Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Khammam.

The Babli project in Maharashtra has opened the gates of the upper Godavari River for it to step into the Sriram Sagar Project in Nizamabad district of Telangana. The state government has issued this order to help farmers protect the ensuing Kharif crops in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. 14 gates of the Babli project were opened under the supervision of central water association officials Venkateswarlu, Satish, Telangana authorities Srinivasa Gupta and the Irrigation department officials of both states.

At present, there is 0.2 TMC water storage in the Babli project. As per the Supreme Court’s verdict, Babli gates will be open from July 1 to October 29. For four months, the rainwater from the upper reaches into the Sriramsagar project. Heavy rains in Maharashtra are likely to inundate the project.

Sriramsagar project located in Balkonda constituency of Nizamabad district is known as the boon of Northern Telangana. The gates of the Babli project built in Maharashtra have been raised above the project. With this, 0.2 TMC of water from the project is coming into the Sriramsagar project. At present, the water level of the Sriram Sagar project has reached 1059.90 feet out of 1091 feet. The water capacity of the project is 80.5 TMC and currently, there is 10.474 TMC of water.

In 2024, a total of 4.215 TMCs of water has been received since June 1. 1.244 TMCs of water have been released from the project. At present, 3,935 cusecs of water will flow into the Sriramsagar project with the lifting of 14 gates of Babli projects. Babli gates will be closed again on October 29. Until then, farmers are happy that if it rains in Maharashtra, water will directly flow into the project.
