New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said that the government is responsible for the security to minorities in the country while addressing at the annual Conference of States Minorities Commission in New Delhi.
Addressing the conference, Manmohan Singh said, "It is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety and security of minorities."
Singh added, "There have been instances where the relationship between majority and minority has suffered in some places. This adversely leads to suffering and pain amongst people."
The Prime Minister's statements hold significance as the recent Muzaffarnagar communal riots in Uttar Pradesh had witnessed bloodshed with the loss of over 60 people's lives. There are 17 State Minorities Commission in India.
