BHUBANESWAR: With global warming on a rise, the State is changing gears to switch to renewable sources of energy for electricity generation, curbing pollution in the process. The power sector in India is undergoing sea changes of late, with the country already being regarded as the second largest wind power generator globally. However, generation of energy from renewable sources is still in the nascent stages in Orissa, with the power requirement in the State for the year 2011-12 pegged at 24,000 Mega Watt.In a bid to raise awareness on ways of power generation from renewable sources of energy, among industrialists and entrepreneurs, Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) conducted a workshop on ‘Renewable and Cogeneration Purchase Obligations Regulation’ here on Friday.Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Energy, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak expressed unhappiness over the renewable energy sector in Orissa.  Despite having an amazing coastline, not enough wind energy is being harnessed, he said. CMD,  GRIDCO, Hemant Sharma said there is a 0.5 per cent growth every year in the energy garnered from solar power, adding that the State boasts of three power plants which harness renewable sources of energy. He also emphasised on the lack of awareness on renewable sources. Deputy Director, National Load Despatch Centre, Minaxi Garg, Deputy Director, OREDA, A K Choudhury and Minister of Science and Technology, Usha Devi were present.
