Govt will ask SC to spare Delhi traders
The GoM on Saturday met in New Delhi to figure out a course of action for the MCD sealing drive issue.

New Delhi: The Centre has decided to file a review petition in Supreme Court seeking relief for 44,000 traders in Capital from sealing.

The Supreme Court has ordered that shops of over 44,000 traders be sealed from November 1 for operating illegally from residential areas. The Delhi government has already appealed to a court-appointed monitoring committee that the sealing drive be posptponed till January 31, 2007.

The Confederation of All India Traders has called for a 3-day Delhi Vyapar Bandh from October 30 to protest the sealing drive. All schools in Delhi to remain closed on Monday in view of traders' bandh.

Senior BJP leader Vijay Goel is leading a two-day protest at the city's town hall in support of the traders.

Members of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) are also meeting Shivraj Patil and Jaipal Reddy to discuss the issue.

The DPCC plans to file a review petition before the Supreme Court, and request the court to put on hold the sealing process till the Delhi Masterplan 2021 is finalised.

Meanwhile, thousands of traders in New Delhi on Saturday sought Congress president Sonia Gandhi's intervention.

The representative of traders' organisations held a 45-minute meeting with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and submitted a memorandum asking for a comprehensive policy on the sealing of shops in residential areas and the demolition of illegal constructions.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who chairs the GoM, met both Delhi Lt. Gov. B.L. Joshi and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday to discuss the issue of traders who are faced with sealing of their stores from Wednesday. The traders have filed affidavits in the Supreme Court.

The GoM meet also reviewed the law and order situation arising out of the sealing drive. The situation had turned violent last month resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to hundreds in Seelumpur area of east Delhi.
